God's Amazing Love

Rita Spencer, Nurse's Aid in the Hospice House

In the Hospice House on the wall hangs a poster that reads:  The Chaplaincy Our Values:   impeccable client care, personal & spiritual growth, supportive work environment, connection with the community, humility, and passion for the work.  It is so true of my everyday job and for everyone else who works at The Chaplaincy.

I bring compassion to work and share it like a bouquet of flowers or a book of poems.  Our patients deserve a place of peace, tranquility, and prayer or meditation while they stay with us.  As I go about from room to room, thoughts always come to mind, "Can I make the patient more comfortable?  Would a drink of water or juice quench their thirst while lying in bed, or would a warm wash cloth on their face make them feel better?"

I think of all the special people who I have met in these rooms of the Hospice House.  Each day, it gives me a great feeling inside to open their window shades and let the sun shine in, turn on their television for them, and get them a cup of coffee.  Everyday, I tuck away in my mind the very best things I can do for patient's here at The Chaplaincy.

I believe God looks at each individual situation.  If He speaks though me with His love and kind spirit, I have achieved my goal.  I truly believe God is love.

Our mission at The Chaplaincy, "Serving others with impeccable spiritual, emotional and physical care.  Our vision:  Together we provide compassionate care bringing comfort and peace in the midst of transitions on life's sacred journey.

Our mission, values and vision were created by a group of fellow workers at The Chaplaincy.  I felt very privileged to take part in their creation.   We (the employees) are the foundation of The Chaplaincy.  I believe we bind the seams together with love and consecration as workers chosen to do God's Will.

The experience of caring for people who are terminally ill is incredible and the love that God sends is something special.  How else could I take care of the patients?  Each person is unique and remains like a lovely memory of the reason why I work at The Chaplaincy's Hospice House.  I believe that each resident has appreciated the attention, smiles, love and compassion that a hospice worker brings.  The pleasure of giving them a bath, brushing their teeth, rearranging their pillows to make them more comfortable or finding their call bell is all a privilege from God.  I believe, Chaplaincy workers are sent by God - hand chosen, compassionate and loving people.

I see His work in me when a patient says, "You don't know until you are in this position what it feels like, thank you, for all you do  - you do a great job.  I appreciate the compliment but my heart sinks as I try to explain, "it is my job and I like helping you."  Other residents have said, "Thank you, it takes something special to do the work you do."  I believe my determination is a gift from God...it is continual, and I never stop loving people.

Everyone who works at hospice has an extra supply of love for the patients.  It takes courage each day to continue in this work and I have an ever lasting peace in my soul for my patients.  I enjoy my work and have done many things I thought I could not do.  Comforting someone may go more than skin deep.  It comes from inside and I believe it is God given.  God gave me an extra dose of love for people who are terminally ill.  I explain it as the Holy Spirit God sending his comforter like a blanket over the patients and staff of the Hospice House.

During one Monday morning chapel, with fellow employees, we were outside by the pond in the hospice house courtyard.  Chaplain Jose Garcia was leading devotions and the subject was the water.  I felt God telling me that my job is a "living water" it was a spring that never stops flowing.  He told me I could drink whenever I wanted because my thirst was never quenched.  I feel a real purpose for me as a hospice worker and I know I am needed.
